The CB9 Business Awards - Our Judges

The following individuals will judge the CB9 Business Awards Entries 2008.

Lina Hogg - President - Suffolk Chamber of Commerce

Lina joined the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce Board in 2004 and has been President since 2006, being only the 3rd female in its 124 year history. She also sits on the Haverhill Chamber Board. She said “In the past the focus has been on a membership organisation for just business people – but I believe that we also need to have links with the community; we need to understand the needs of community to help build a healthy economy.” Lina believes that making links with other organisations and building partnerships is one of the key roles of the Chamber and she brings a wealth of commercial experience to our judging panel.

Lina is vice-chair of Suffolk Business Women (SBW), which is a network for women in business established 15 years ago and somehow finds time to be MD of leading HR outsourcing company, Picasso HR, providing HR, employment law and training services to all sizes of businesses in all sectors throughout East Anglia and the UK. Lina is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD).

Matthew Darroch Thompson - Business Advisor - MENTA

After giving up a career in the city ten years ago to see more of his family, Matthew has set up several small businesses which he has grown and sold. He still runs an environmental consultancy and is director of two other small concerns. He also writes regularly on business and IT matters.

Most of his time is devoted to helping develop MENTA, the Mid Anglian Enterprise Agency, which provides business advice to small organisations and those considering going into business MENTA offers a mix of one-to-one advice, business skills workshops and networking opportunities.

Andrea Mayley - Economic Development Manager - St Edmundsbury Borough Council

As a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Andrea worked as a professional Planner for over ten years before being appointed to St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 2002. Much of her time has been spent working on the Council’s major projects such as the cattle market redevelopment where she was part of the project team concerned with representing the council’s land owning interests in the site. Andrea is also heavily involved in the development of a new business incubation centre on Council land at Moreton Hall and has supported the application by the Mid Anglian Enterprise Agency (Menta) for EEDA funding to support the provision of an additional business incubation centre in Haverhill.

The Economic Development Team aims to create a prosperous and dynamic local economy and it does this by working in partnership with other bodies to attract new businesses into the Borough; encourage new businesses to start and existing businesses to grow; lobby government to provide the infrastructure and climate to support business growth; ensure the supply of commercial sites and premises; help to bridge the skills gap; promote the economic vitality of town centres; and enhance the environment and encourage sustainable development
